Introduction

The Birth of the Beloved Bhakta

॥ ॐ ॥

Hanumān Jayantī celebrates the appearance of Lord Hanumān — believed to be a partial incarnation of Shiva, the greatest devotee of Rāma, and the embodiment of strength, courage, humility and selfless service.

The festival is observed on different days across regions — Chaitra Pūrṇimā in the South and parts of the North, Kārtika Kṛṣṇa Chaturdaśī in many Northern states. Wherever and whenever it is kept, it is the day to recite the Hanumān Chālīsā with all the devotion the heart can muster.

Chapter I · The Original Story

Son of the Wind

Añjanā, a celestial maiden born on earth, performed long penance to Shiva and was blessed with a son. Vāyu carried Shiva's seed to her, and on a sacred dawn the child Māruti was born — leaping into the sky almost as soon as he could see.

Taking the rising sun for a ripe fruit, the infant flew upward to seize it. Indra struck him down with the vajra and the boy fell, jaw broken. Furious, Vāyu withdrew the breath of the world. The devas rushed forward and showered the child with boons — immortality, immense strength, mastery of every weapon, and the freedom to choose his form. That child became Hanumān.

बुद्धिर्बलं यशो धैर्यं निर्भयत्वमरोगता ।

"Wisdom, strength, fame, courage, fearlessness, health — all flow from the remembrance of Hanumān."

Chapter II · Inner Meaning

Three Sacred Themes

अप्रतिम बल

Boundless Strength

Hanumān is the cosmic strength itself — physical, mental and spiritual, awakened the moment Rāma is remembered.

अनन्य भक्ति

Unbroken Devotion

The model bhakta who lives only for the Lord — his very name is bhakti made flesh.

निःस्वार्थ सेवा

Selfless Service

Every leap across the ocean, every mountain carried, every breath was for another — never for himself.

Chapter III · The Beloved Leelas

Stories of Hanumān

Birth & the Sun

Born to Añjanā and Vāyu by Shiva's grace, the child Māruti mistook the rising sun for a fruit and leapt to swallow it. Indra struck him with the vajra, breaking his jaw (hanu) — and that is how he received the name Hanumān.

Devotion to Rāma

From the moment he met Rāma in Kiṣkindhā, his life became a single offering. 'Where my Lord's stories are sung,' he says, 'there I stand with folded hands.'

The Leap to Lankā

He crossed the great ocean in a single bound to find Sītā in Aśoka-vāṭikā, set Lankā ablaze with his burning tail, and returned bearing her cūḍāmaṇi to Rāma.

Sañjīvanī Parvata

When Lakṣmaṇa fell in battle, Hanumān flew across continents and — unable to find the right herb — lifted the entire mountain in his hand, returning by dawn to save the prince's life.

Chapter IV · Sacred Practices

Rituals of the Day

Hanumān Chālīsā

Tulsīdās's 40-verse hymn is recited 1, 7, 11 or 108 times — there is no festival of Hanumān without it.

Sindoor & Oil

Devotees apply chameli oil mixed with sindoor on the deity and a small tilak on their own forehead — protection and strength.

Sundarakāṇḍa Pārāyaṇa

The fifth chapter of the Rāmāyaṇa — the kāṇḍa of Hanumān's leap and Sītā's discovery — is read with great devotion.

Besan Laḍḍū Naivedya

Boondi or besan laḍḍūs are offered as prasāda — the favourite sweet of the Sankaṭ-mocana.

Vrata & Temple Visit

Many devotees observe a fast and visit famous temples — Sankaṭ Mocana in Vārāṇasī, Jakhū in Shimla, Salasar Bālājī in Rajasthan.

Sevā of Monkeys

Feeding monkeys, the small kindred of Hanumān, is considered especially auspicious on this day.

Chapter V · Across Bhārata

Awaken the Inner Hanumān

Hanumān reminds us that the greatest strength is the strength to serve, and the greatest fearlessness is the fearlessness of total surrender. With Rāma in the heart, no ocean is too wide.
