Chapter II

Origin & Significance

The Gayatri Mantra appears in the Rigveda — Mandala 3, Hymn 62, Verse 10. It was revealed to Sage Vishwamitra during deep meditation.

It is called Gāyatrī because it protects the one who chants it — Gāyantaṃ trāyate iti Gāyatrī.

Considered the essence of the Vedas and the most powerful mantra for spiritual evolution, it is traditionally first taught during the Upanayana (sacred thread ceremony), marking the beginning of one's spiritual education.
