Introduction

"Established in One's Own Self"

॥ ॐ ॥
Ayurveda — herbs, oils and ancient palm-leaf manuscripts
Āyurveda — the science of life, an Upaveda of the Atharvaveda

In Sanatan Dharma, health is not merely the absence of disease — it is complete physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. The ancient seers saw the human body as a sacred temple and taught that true health flows from living in harmony with nature, dharma and one's own deepest Self.

The very word Swāsthya means "to be established in one's own Self"Sva + Sthiti. Real health is not just fitness; it is inner balance, alignment with one's true nature, and the joy that arises naturally from that alignment.

Chapter VII

The Spiritual Roots of Healing

Sanatan tradition teaches that many illnesses have karmic and mental roots — and so true healing requires more than medicine alone. Three inner purifications are spoken of:

Karma Śuddhi

Purification of past actions through good deeds, dāna and sevā.

Manas Śuddhi

Purification of the mind through meditation, positive thinking and svādhyāya.

Ātma Jñāna

Self-knowledge — the deepest healing is the recognition of one's own true Self.

Chapter VIII

Stories of Healing in the Scriptures

Markandeya & Mahāmṛtyuñjaya

Destined to die at sixteen, young Markandeya embraced the Śiva linga and chanted the Mahāmṛtyuñjaya. Shiva appeared and granted him eternal life — the very birth of this healing mantra in lived experience.

Dhanvantari from Samudra Manthan

When the gods and asuras churned the ocean of milk, Lord Dhanvantari emerged bearing the pot of amṛta and the science of Āyurveda — medicine itself a gift from the Divine.

Hanuman & Sañjīvanī

To save Lakshmana's life, Hanuman lifted the entire Dronagiri mountain and brought the healing herb. Faith, strength and divine grace united in the act of healing.

Chapter IX

Modern Relevance

Globally Recognised

Yoga and Āyurveda are now studied and applied worldwide for stress, immunity and lifestyle diseases.

Integrated Care

Hospitals and wellness centres increasingly combine Āyurvedic treatment with modern medicine.

Best of Both Worlds

Modern medicine + Āyurvedic lifestyle + spiritual practice gives the most complete healing.

Health as a Divine Blessing

In Sanatan Dharma, health is considered a divine blessing and the very foundation for fulfilling dharma and reaching higher goals in life. True health arises when we live in harmony with nature, follow a disciplined daily routine, eat pure food, practice yoga and meditation, and hold the mind in devotion.

स्वास्थ्यं परमं भाग्यं, स्वास्थ्यं सर्वार्थसाधनम् ॥

"Health is the greatest fortune. Health is the means to achieve every goal of life."
